When Mandalynn of Striped Swallow Designs hinted during the testing for the girls coachella shorts that she would be releasing a women’s version I was sold. The girls shorts were an easy sew and since I used knit for Sophie’s shorts I already had fabric ideas swirling. Lucky for me Mandalynn picked me to test the women’s version.
My original plan was to make a version out of the same pony fabric I made Sophie’s out of but then while walking the aisles of Joann’s looking for something else I came across this double sided black and white knit and knew it had to be a pair of Coachella’s for me.
Because it is double sided I thought it would be fun to use the back side as an accent on the front panel and waistband. I love the effect of the two patterns. The fabric is quite busy so I opted to leave the pom pom trim off. Without trim and by using knit I didn’t have to hem the bottom so these shorts came together incredibly quick, like 20 minutes quick.
These shorts feel like I am wearing pj’s in public. I am not opposed to wearing pj’s in public but this is the added bonus of not looking like a frump but still wearing super comfortable shorts. I actually have to keep myself from wearing them multiple times a week, they are just that comfortable.
Mandalynn did a really great job creating this pattern and it fit me spot on for my hip measurement. There is no pulling in the back or gathering in the front, which is something to be proud of. I actually don’t think I had any real feedback for this pattern, I loved it so much. I think every pattern designer hates the tester that has no feedback.
The pattern has 3 rise options (low, mid and high) and 2 lengths (2″ and 4″ inseam). When you combine that with the ability to use knit or woven with this pattern you are left with a pattern that gives you endless options. So you can basically fill your drawers with coachella shorts.
