Sometimes you when you are combing the racks of your local thrift store you pick an item simply for the fabric. You don’t even pay attention to what the item actually is but the fabric catches your attention and you know you will find a way to make that item into something wearable.
Enter what I can only guess was once a hospital gown, quite a fancy fabric for a hospital gown but based on the shape and the pocket that is what it must have been.
Digging through my pile of thrift store finds I came across this x-large men’s dress shirt I had purchased and planned to refashion to a tunic for myself that I could wear with leggings and my favourite black boots.
It is exactly what I wanted, really big and long enough for a tunic.
First step was to put the shirt on and pin where I wanted it to come in. As you can tell by the pin placement the shirt needed to come in quite a bit to fit me. Because of how much the shirt had to come in I knew the pocket was going to need to be removed. So I went ahead and started unpicking the pocket.
I am slightly addicted to thrift shopping. Not only is it a great place to get home goods and kids clothes but I think it is a great place to get fun fabrics and shirts for yourself. I find that I like to shop in the large and xlarge section because I can always just take the clothing in to fit my size and you end up with a more custom piece of clothing.
On a recent trip to Value Village I found this Banana Republic sweater for $7 and thought I could do something cute with it. I had seen this pin for a sweatshirt that was refashioned and was inspired by the zippers on the shoulders.

For this weeks Refashion Wednesday I decided to take a waffle knit shirt I found for Sophie at Value Village and turn it into a dress.
Welcome to another instalment of Refashion Wednesday, oh wait it’s actually Thursday, well lets just pretend it is Wednesday then.
After dropping Sophie off at a playdate yesterday I went for a quick trip to Value Village looking for a crew neck kids sweatshirt that I could make over since I had a project in mind. Rookie mistake, you can’t go looking for something specific because they are never going to have it. Since there was no crew neck sweatshirt to be found that would work I just started thumbing through the racks.

When looking through my closet recently I came across a dress that was never in a million years getting worn again. I would imagine that I am not the only person that has clothes like that. At some point you bought it and liked it but then things change like your style or body shape and it no longer works. You can always donate that clothing item but if it is a fabric that you like why not try to refashion it into something new for your wardrobe.
Last week I got inspired to take the crib down and refashion it into something different. As usual my inspiration came from Pinterest and I wrote briefly about it here before starting the project.

Its such a great use for a piece of furniture that can no longer be used for its original intent.
In our case we were given a crib by my mom in the hopes that my son would sleep in it. Well that never happened so we have had an assembled crib just hanging out in Sophie’s room for months unused. The moment I saw this picture I knew we had to recreate it with our crib.
I am definitely not the first person to profess their love of all things Pinterest because let’s face it that website is beyond addicting. I remember when I first joined I would spend hours pinning things every day. The difference for me and lots of people on Pinterest is that I actually do some of the things I am pinning. It is such a great resource for people that are into crafts and DIY because it is littered with lots of inspiration. Also planning a child’s birthday party is so easy with the help of Pinterest. I joke with friends that had Pinterest been around when I got married it would have been completely different and probably over the top.
